Doweled Post & Rail Fence

Fence Overview

Overview

Doweled Post & Rail Fence is one of the most traditional ranch fencing styles in North America. Built using round wood posts with round rails inserted through drilled holes in the posts, this fence offers a clean, natural appearance that has stood the test of time.

This fence can be stained many shades of brown to fit your ranch’s color scheme. While designs may vary slightly by region and supplier, our Doweled Post and Rail fencing remains a trusted solution for many home and ranch owners.

Rails

Rails are constructed from round wood poles that are inserted directly into the posts. This center-mount design provides a clean look from both sides of the fence. We recommend screwing the ends of the top rail for extra stability.

Choose 8’ rail length for less sag or 10’ length for a more economical fence. Special note: Because wood is a natural product, you should expect to see some natural sagging and warping with this material. To avoid sagging, choose a fence with steel rails.

Posts

Doweled post and rail fencing uses round wood posts that are pressure treated for ground contact and long-term durability. Posts are drilled to allow rails to be inserted creating a clean appearance.

In many cases, posts feature dome-style tops for improved water shedding and visual appeal; however, post top styles, diameters, and wood species may vary based on supplier and regional material availability.

Customizations

Doweled Post & Rail Fence can be customized to suit a wide range of ranch and property needs. Common configurations include 2-rail, 3-rail, and 4-rail systems. Fence height, diameter, rail spacing, and wood species may vary by supplier and what state you are located in.

If your project requires specific specs, please let us know so we can work with you to meet your needs. This fence may be stained to a more rustic brown color if desired and wire mesh can be added if being used for a dog fence or yard fence. Choose matching wooden gates for aesthetics or use standard steel tube gates or mesh gates for increased durability.
